EndNote

EndNote and MacOS

  • The EndNote app works best when using Firefox.
  • Save your Library in the EndNote applications folder not in the Desktop or Documents area or an icloud location - delete if you have created a library in either location to avoid confusion. See this Clarivate article on preventing syncing Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud Drive in macOS Sierra and High Sierra.
  • The EndNote tab is missing from the ribbon in MS Word. If you are using Microsoft Word on your Mac product with Apple M1 chip you may get an error:

"Word wasn't able to load an add-inn. Your add-inn isn't compatible with this version of Word. Please contact the add-inn provider for an update. (EndNote CWYW Word 16.bundle)".

The EndNote 20.1 update provides compatibility with Apple Silicon-based macOS. please update to EndNote 20.1. If you are unable to use EndNote 20 or have EndNote X9 please see instructions on this page.

  • Exporting from databases. The first time you export references from a database you may need to point the download to the EndNote program (associate the file). Find your downloaded file in Finder (downloads) - Ctrl Click on the file > you will be asked what program to use to open the downloaded file > go to the EndNote program (within the EndNote Folder) and highlight it > check the 'Always open with" box > open. Once you have done this, EndNote should be able to import the files directly.
  • If you get a message "can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer > To to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > in the "Allow apps downloaded from" area the file that has been recently blocked will be visible > choose "Open Anyway"
