Supplementary volume

A supplement to a volume not associated with a specific issue:

Put the volume number then the abbreviation "Suppl." and the number of the supplement if there is more than one supplement.

Author(s) – last name, initial(s) - use & for multiple authors. (Year). Title of journal article. Journal Name – italicised, Volume – italicised(Suppl. number), Page number(s). DOI address OR URL (if no DOI available)

A supplement to a particular issue of a journal:

Add the abbreviation "Suppl." after the issue number to indicate you are referencing the supplement to this issue. Write the relevant page numbers as they appear on the page including the letters both in-text and in the full reference.

Single article in a special issue or special section

A special issue or special section of a journal:

Articles in special issues focus on the same topic. Contributions are often invited by the journal's editors. Special sections are like special issues but smaller. They appear within a regular issue and may or may not have a title.

To reference a single article in a special issue or special section:
  • Follow the format for a journal article (below). The title of the special section or issue does not appear in the reference. If "S" appears in the page number(s), then include as written in the publication
