Treaties (AGLC4 rule 8)

Footnote - general format
Treaty Title, Parties' Names, opened for signature/signed Date, Treaty Series (entered into force Date) Pinpoint.

International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, opened for signature 16 December 1966, 993 UNTS 3 (entered into force 3 January 1976).
Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, opened for signature 23 May 1969, 1155 UNTS 331 (entered into force 27 January 1980). 

Additional tips
  • If the parties' names are included in the treaty title it should be reproduced in the citation exactly as it appears in the title (AGLC4 rule 8.1)
  • Where the authoritative version of a treaty is only available in a language other than English, provide the full title in the original language with a translation in square brackets (AGLC4 rule 8.2)
  • For multilateral treaties with more than three signatories, the names of the parties should not be included after any treaty title (AGLC4 rule 8.2)
  • If the names of the parties to a bilateral or trilateral treaty appear in the title, they should not be repeated after the title (AGLC4 rule 8.2)
  • For treaties not yet in force use '(not yet in force)' instead of the date of entry into force (AGLC4 rule 8.3.3)
  • Citations to a treaty series should be included with an abbreviation for the series name (AGLC4 rule 8.4)

Additional tips
  • Where the date of conclusion and entry into force are the same, use: (signed and entered into force Date) (AGLC4 rule 8.3.2)
  • If the parties to the treaty are not clear from the title include the parties' names after the title

Reservations or declarations to articles of a treaty (AGLC4 8.5)

Cite the country's instrument of ratification or other document that contains the reservation or declaration.

Additional tips
  • A URL may be included after the first reference to a source if it would help retrieval according to rules 4.4–4.5.
  • Do not include the parties' names if they are included in the title of the MOU.
