Researcher Essentials

*Important information about this agreement*
The cap for this agreement is predicted to be reached by the end of September.  This will effect the process of approval for open access publishing in both fully open access (OA) journals (Gold OA) and Hybrid journals (OA and behind paywall/subscription access models) in the following ways:
  • Wiley Hybrid Journals: NB. The majority of Wiley journals are hybrid. APC waivers for hybrid journals will no longer be approved before the end of September. This will result in authors receiving denial messages directly from CAUL. Authors will have the option to either:
    • publish via the subscription route (article accessible to subscribing institutions / paying individuals only) OR
    • pay the associated APC with a 10% discount to make their article OA.
  • Wiley Fully Open Access Journals: For authors submitting to fully OA journals
    • after 30 September and accepted before 31 December 2024, their articles will not be covered by the CAUL Agreement. Authors will be required to pay the APC with a 10% discount.

    • Articles submitted prior to 30 September will continue to be supported throughout 2024.
  • 2025 Agreement: CAUL has not yet finalised an agreement with Wiley for 2025. The current agreement expires on 31 December 2024. Hybrid articles accepted after September 2024 must continue to publication  - they will not be eligible for OA in any 2025 agreement. Similarly, fully OA articles submitted after 30 September and accepted in before 31 December 2024 must pay the APC. No coverage will be provided by the CAUL agreement, and authors will be directed to an author-pays route with a 10% discount for the APC.

Key points

  • Articles accepted after January 1, 2022 are eligible to be published open access under this agreement. Articles must be accepted in a Wiley hybrid journal on or after 1 January 2022, or submitted to a Wiley or Hindawi fully open access journal on or after 1 January 2023
  • Authors from participating institutions may publish in most of Wiley's hybrid and gold OA journals without the need for any transactional article processing charge (APC)
  • Hybrid journals that "flip" to open access during the course of the agreement also remain available for OA publishing
  • The responsible corresponding author must use their institutional email address when submitting an article for publication and include a participating institution as one of their affiliations to benefit from this agreement
    • In Wiley journals, the eligible author is designated "responsible corresponding author". All articles can have more than one corresponding author, but only one "responsible corresponding author".
    • In Hindawi journals, articles will only have one designated "corresponding author"
  • Authors will be identified as eligible by their:
    • institutional affiliation
  • Wiley does charge additional fees such as page and/or colour fees not covered by the APC waiver. Check the journal's submission guidelines for other fees and charges.
