Open Resources

A collection of Open Access Resources

Draft your open textbook

In the draft stage, project authors:

  1. finalise the book structure
  2. write, revise or curate content
  3. ensure content is written with inclusion and diversity in mind
  4. create/curate figures, images and multimedia
  5. create interactive learning objects
  6. track and check copyright.

A copyright tracker will be provided to staff at the outset of the project, the Library will check the content for copyright compliance.

Staff may also be able to request assistance with creating figures, images, multimedia and interactive learning objects from the Centre of Teaching and Learning.

Use of AI in the drafting stage

If you are planning to use AI in the creation of your OER, make sure your use does not compromise:

  • your ability to claim authorship of the work
  • your own or another person's copyright.

Things to keep in mind:

  • copyright can not be claimed for material generated by AI unless significant human effort has gone into the revision and writing of the work
  • use of third-party copyright material or Library subscribed resources as an input into AI may breach copyright or terms of the library's licence agreements (see Copyright and AI for more information)
  • AI tools often do not reference or acknowledge the original source of the content, this may breach the moral rights of copyright owners and academic integrity
  • Open AI tools tend to train on the material used as input. If using an AI tool it is best to use a closed tool such as Microsoft Copilot (see Copyright and AI for more information).

Some appropriate uses of AI include:

  • brainstorming and ideation
  • organising ideas or providing a structure for content
  • proofreading.

All use of AI should be acknowledged with a disclaimer outlining:

  • the tool that was used
  • how it was used.

An example disclaimer is:

Content within this OER was partially generated using Microsoft Copilot (Copilot, April 2025). The tool was used for idea generation and proofreading text. All content has been reviewed and adapted by the author to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

For more guidance on when it might be appropriate to use Generative AI see the GenAI Guide.
