Indigenous Knowledge

The AIATSIS Code sets national standards for the ethical and responsible conduct of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research, across all disciplines and methodologies. It is for use by those undertaking research, reviewing research or funding research, including individuals, universities, governments, industry and community organisations.

The guidelines arise from the same philosophical space as the AIATSIS Guidelines for ethical research in Australian Indigenous studies. They embody the key idea that the publishing of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander authors, and research or stories about them, needs to be done ethically.

Aims to guide researchers, research participants, community organisations, students and supervisors, and ethics committees through the ethics of undertaking research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Provides a set of principles to ensure research is safe, respectful, responsible, high quality and of benefit to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Provides advice on how the values and principles outlined in Ethical conduct in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities: Guidelines for researchers and stakeholders can be put into practice in research.

Includes the 2011 publication: Researching Indigenous Health: A practical guide for researchers and the 2009 document: Supporting Indigenous Researchers: A practical guide for supervisors

A range of resources exploring themes such as ICIP, community engagement & culturally safe research.

Refer to this guide for information on conducting literature reviews, reference & data management, publishing and more.

Created by the Indigenous Archives Collective, this guide includes the Indigenous Knowledge Attribution Toolkit, with a decision tree, advice about choosing appropriate sources and considering authorship.
